TEACHING

As an instructor, I nurture critical thinking by encouraging students to be active learners, consider multiple perspectives and challenge other viewpoints, draw connections between course material with their own lives, and allow their perspectives to evolve as they engage with new material. With the current job market, it is also important for students to consider diversification in their learning and skill acquisition. As such, I encourage students to develop a broad skill set that can be applied in a multitude of career paths. My teaching approach is also based on the principles of pluralism and collaborative learning, whereby people bring their senses and experiences to the learning environment and co-construct knowledge. When teaching human sexuality (course syllabus), for example, I assign weekly reading reflections, so students learn how to think beyond the content and apply it to their lives and the world around them. These reflections also allow me to get to know my students more personally and offers them a chance to ask questions or seek support, like the “question box” regularly used in sex education classes. Students are also assigned a 6-page APA-formatted research essay on a human sexuality topic of their choosing to aid them in further developing their skills in writing and literature review. I am prepared to teach courses on human sexuality, program evaluation, group dynamics, interpersonal processes, research methods, introduction to psychology, and qualitative research. I would be interested in developing courses on program evaluation that include community-based collaborations.
